What we want

We are looking for a Veterinarian - Anesthesia to join the Small Animal Anesthesia department of our Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital! The ideal candidate is responsible for supervising and providing anesthetic care and pain management to animals admitted to the Large and Small Animal Teaching Hospitals. What you need to know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Work Schedule: Work duties will begin after 3pm Monday – Thursday until non-emergency cases are complete. After hours on call is expected Sunday – Thursday to cover emergency cases.

Position Details: Individuals in this role will be able to attend anesthesia resident and student rounds.

Required Education and Experience:

  • DVM/VMD or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited school

  • 3 years of related experience in small animal anesthesia (residency training will fulfill this requirement)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills

  • Meticulous documentation skills, self-motivation

  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision

  • Advanced computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry

  • Ability to manage time wisely and prioritize duties and cases

  • Working knowledge of equipment used in a veterinary teaching hospital

  • Thorough knowledge of equipment used in with area of specialization

  • Ability to move or lift heavy loads

  • Strong animal handling skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively at all levels within the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Other Requirements or Factors:

  • Must be able to work within time constraints and in crisis situations

  • Ability to work a varied schedule as well as an on-call basis

Preferred Experience:

  • Completion of a residency program in anesthesia/analgesia recognized by the AVMA

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, Multi-parameter monitoring equipment, ventilators, blood gas analyzers, C02 monitors, defibrillators, and other equipment required for anesthetic management of veterinary patients

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care - The candidate will be required to deliver anesthetic care to small and large animal patients in the veterinary teaching hospital. The individual will be required to work independently and must be able to supervise staff and residents as appropriate. Duties might include, but are not limited to, developing anesthesia and pain management plans, catheter and endotracheal tube placement, anesthesia induction, delivery of maintenance anesthetic drugs including CRI/TIVA/PIVA, patient monitoring, utilization of anesthesia monitoring equipment, patient recovery, and appropriate deliver of pain control modalities.

  • Mentorship of technicians, residents, and students - Responsible for directing and mentoring technical staff and residents. May provide limited mentorship to students. Performs other duties as assigned.
