Job Description

  • Assesses and manage critically ill children at SSMHealth Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital as part of the multidisciplinary critical care team

  • Maintains critical care procedural skills such as endotracheal intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement and thoracentesis

  • Contributes to educational programs for residents, nursing and advanced practice nursing students.

  • Night Shift duties are to be expected

  • Acute Care Certification is required

Job Summary:

Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care of critically ill pediatric patients in collaboration with a physician or his/her designee. Performs job duties in accordance with the values of the SSM Health Care System and principles of Continuous Improvement.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilizing an advanced level of knowledge and in collaboration with the physicians and multi-disciplinary healthcare team, demonstrates, initiates, and provides medical interventions in response to acute and life-threatening changes in pediatric patient conditions.

  • Assesses pediatric patients presenting for acute and chronic health events and obtains a personal medical history, appropriate physical examination and recording the resulting information. Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic agents. Demonstrates the advanced knowledge, communication, and critical thinking skills necessary to provide care.

  • Plan patient care by making comprehensive, complex clinical decisions based on advanced diagnostic skills and professional judgment, reviewing results of diagnostic tests and procedures, developing, and implementing a treatment plan for the patient and/or family, and providing a wide range of interventions required to effect change.

  • Performs routine and/or complex procedures related to the specific departmental needs including but not limited to central line placement, arterial line placement, intubation, and chest tube placement.

  • Demonstrates competency in advanced problem-solving clinical decision-making, utilizing appropriate resources, consulting with physician, and involving management where necessary.

  • Applies evidence-based practices to achieve multidisciplinary collaboration to facilitate continuity of care and referral of patients to other appropriate community healthcare facilities, agencies, and resources

  • Maintains effective methods of formal and informal communication with staff so that dissemination of information/administrative decisions are conveyed in a positive and supportive manner; motivates and supports staff to achieve department/contractual goals and operational benchmarks. Ensures timely and compliant documentation.

  • Takes responsibility for ongoing professional development through competency validation, delivery of evidence-based care, and continuing education. Maintains collaborative relationships with the physician, APP, nursing, and administrative team.

  • Evaluates patient care practices associated with specialty area, defines needs/problems with patient care and makes constructive suggestions that creates a positive patient outcome.

  • Promotes positive health behaviors and self-care skills through education and/or counseling.

  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Completion of a formal post-basic education program from or formally affiliated with an accredited college, university, or hospital (Before July 1, 1998) or a graduate degree from an accredited college or university (After July 1, 1998) with a concentration in the appropriate advanced practice nursing clinical specialty area.

  • Nurse Practitioner (ANCC) certification issued by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or Nurse Practitioner (PNCB) certification issued by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association.

  • Current or compact RN license in appropriate state.

  • Appropriate APRN license or document of recognition in appropriate state.

EXPERIENCE

  • One year experience as a Nurse Practitioner or two years’ Registered Nurse experience in a pediatric acute care setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.

  • Constant standing and walking.

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.

  • Frequent sitting, reaching and keyboard use/data entry.

  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors.

  • Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.

  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.

  • Occasional lifting/moving of patients.

  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.

  • Occasional driving.

  • Rare crawling and running.
