What You Will Do

Come join the Radiation Instrument and Calibration (RIC) Team in the Radiation Protection Service Group (RP-SVS) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This Health Physicist position provides RP instrumentation technical advice and support, customer service, troubleshooting, type testing, and collaboration with the RP instrumentation manufacturers in the development or improvement of instrumentation. Our team supports the Radiation Protection Program by maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting and development radiation protection instrumentation.

Health Physicist Level 4: $122,300 - $206,300

This position is responsible for the testing, evaluating, maintenance, and calibrating program for fixed and portable alpha, beta, photon, neutron, and tritium radiation protection instrumentation. Provide expert-level technical guidance and sets parameters and operational capabilities for the radiation protection instrumentation program. Viewed as the authority for interpretation of radiation protection instrument performance and measurement results. Provides expert technical and professional guidance to radiation protection division, directorate, and Laboratory management. Develops advanced concepts, techniques, and standards based on professional principles and theories. Works on unusually significant, unique, or complex issues with existing radiation protection instrument models. Develop requirements for new instrument models thus meeting the needs for monitoring special radiological conditions. Performs special calibrations using a variety of radiation sources along with evaluations on existing and proposed instrumentation. Participate in the development, evacuation, and implementation of new methods to improve radiation protection practices with regards to radiation protection instrumentation.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Advanced knowledge and experience of health physics concepts and practices, including the used and physics of radiation detection.

• Familiar with 10CFR835 and ANSI guidelines regarding radiation monitoring instrumentation.

• Demonstrated experience providing solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of applied engineering and scientific principles.

• Ability to exercise the objectives and considerable latitude in determining the course of their projects by determining the requirements and approaches needed to successfully complete assignments.

• Working knowledge of and familiarity with radiation worker principles and practices.

• Experience in evaluating alternatives and develop experimental or design plans.

• Ability to work independently and as team member.

Training/Certifications: Certification by American Board of Health Physics preferred.

Education/Experience: B.S degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science and 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position. Master's degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the calibration, testing, selection, and use of radiation monitoring instruments.

• Experience with analog and digital electronic troubleshooting and repair at the component level.

• Ability to develop and test the performance of newly developed radiation detection instrumentation.

• Experience providing guidance on large-scope and/or significantly complex radiological problems, recommending and assuring implementation of corrective actions.

• Demonstrated ability to develop, modify, and implement/follow technical procedures.

• Demonstrated oral and written communications skills.

• Experience with personal computers.

• Demonstrated commitment to safety, security, quality, and customer service.

• Experience in using the Los Alamos Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) radiation transport code.

• Knowledge of ANSI environmental testing programs for radiation monitoring instruments

Work Schedule: The Radiation Instrumentation and Calibration Team work on site and have varying work schedule to best meet the team's and personal needs. The various work schedules vary from a 5/40 or a 9/80.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
