Summary:

The Sr. Maintenance Supervisor - Refrigeration leads the planning, organization, and scheduling of specific job assignments. Contributes to budget development/adherence in defined areas. Coaches and teaches team members and provides clear, actionable input throughout the year and during performance evaluations. Develops technical, engineering, manufacturing and HES standards and programs. Meets customer needs in support of business goals.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and manage a world-class refrigeration maintenance program. Develop sustainable methodologies, systems, tools, and processes to improve refrigeration system uptime and reliability.

  • Develop a formal, structured process to routinely audit the effectiveness of the refrigeration maintenance program and identify areas of opportunity for continuous improvement.

  • Participate in capital project design reviews, maintenance program reviews, applicable work groups, technical interface meetings, tests, and demonstrations as required, to provide critical input assuring continuous process improvement.

  • Provide essential support for capital projects, utilizing Refrigeration team resources. This includes mechanical commissioning through system startup and load balancing.

  • Responsible for the recruitment, training, evaluation and development of employees.

  • Proactively coaches, counsels, manages and directs personnel in assignments relative to department priorities, sense of urgency, and utilization of multiple skill sets.

  • Ensure refrigeration personnel are properly trained and certified. Identify opportunities for professional growth and assign work that will foster their growth and technical expertise.

  • Meets customer expectations and continuously improves processes in consultation with internal departments and external resources.

  • Provide oversight to ensure SOP/PM compliance in accordance with plant engineering and cGMP standards.

  • Possess advanced understanding and experience with refrigeration equipment including, but not limited to Frick, York, Trane, and Vilter systems ranging in size from 5 to 2200 tons. Experience with compressor packages including centrifugal, reciprocating and screw compressors utilizing R134A, R404, R717, R22 and R507 and various other refrigerant types.

  • Possess and demonstrate a high level of working knowledge and aptitude with Thermodynamics, Compressed Gases, Hydraulics, Pumps, Valves, Programmable Logic Controllers/programming, Variable Frequency Drives, Distributed Control Systems (Delta V, ABB, Andover). Able to review software program parameters and logic states to facilitate troubleshooting and remediation.

  • Develop, track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment reliability, maintainability, and cost avoidance due to early fault detection. Define opportunities and drive continuous improvement activities in the area of equipment reliability.

  • Lead all refrigeration employees in compliance with the Clean Air Act section 608 of 40 CFR part 82 “Protection of Stratospheric Ozone” and maintain records of the refrigerant usage/consumption as directed by the regulation. Provide updated information to the ESS group on this program while maintaining accurate and contemporaneous documentation on the consumption and usage of refrigerants.

  • Provide direction and support for the 12-hour rotating shift HVAC/R technicians. This shift reports directly to a Utility operations supervisor during off hours and then to this supervisor during routine shift hours. Shift coverage includes the operation and maintenance of all plant utility systems, responding to all equipment failures.

  • Be available to respond to any off-shift hours refrigeration maintenance and operations emergencies.

  • Provides effective leadership for his staff. Defines how to capture and report critical refrigeration information, interacting with senior executives, senior technical managers, department staff, customers and suppliers within and external to the company. Actively pursues and manages process optimization, seeking out opportunities for project management. Gains consensus/cooperation on issues that affect multiple functional areas. Coaches, counsels, manages, and directs personnel in appropriate division/business unit assignments, providing guidance on critical tasks, instilling a sense of urgency and encouraging the use of multiple skill sets.

The Sr. Maintenance Supervisor - Refrigeration has knowledge of engineering programs, systems and procedures. Excellent verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization. Ability to identify practical applications to technical challenges with the flexibility to adapt programs and services to meet specific requirements. Strong analytical and leadership skills with dedicated focus to team development and ability to communicate clear vision for future performance. Ability to identify and leverage unique skill sets to support site wide scope of work.

Requirements:

Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering. Minimum of 8 years’ experience in refrigeration system operation and maintenance, preferably in a GMP or FDA regulated environment. At least 5 years in a leadership capacity.

Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements. Example: If a job level requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years of experience, an equivalency could include 8 years of experience, an Associate’s degree with 6 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience.

Work is performed in an office and/or a laboratory/manufacturing environment. Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Exposure to electrical office equipment. Exposure to extreme cold below 32*, miscellaneous production chemicals, moving machinery and production equipment. Exposure to high levels of noise on production floor. Personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear, garments and gloves. Frequently sits for 4-6 hours per day. Frequent hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Occasionally walks. Often performs duties standing. Frequently bends and twists neck and waist. Light to moderate lifting and carrying objects with a maximum lift of 35lbs. Frequently drives to other facilities. Able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken and written words and sentences. Frequently interacts with others, relates sensitive information to diverse groups.
