Salary Grade: NC11 / Salary Range: $42,464-$74,313

Hiring Range $65,532-$67,170

This is advanced level technical engineering work supporting engineers. Positions in this classification perform technical duties supporting engineers and other professionals in areas such as construction, materials testing, design, surveys, and/or program/regulatory compliance. Work functions may include: inspection for compliance and/or code; collection and analysis of field data; testing of materials; review, modification and/or design of plans; analysis of engineering related data, products, and/or functions. Work may include functioning in a full supervisory role for direct reports including performing/supervising several administrative functions or supervision of a separate function of considerable complexity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience with mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision

  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments

Additional Expectations:

Working knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in the construction of roads and public utilities with limited supervision. Thorough understanding of the Departments Standards and Specifications related to road, structure, and utility construction. Ability to monitor utility relocation efforts by providing survey layout/alignments of proposed roadway/utility improvements, daily inspections, and tracking relocation work. Ability to document findings and to take corrective actions. Ability to clearly and concisely convey information orally or in writing to individuals and/or groups. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others. Ability to evaluate and apply engineering judgment to plan interpretation; establish positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors. Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.

Employee may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, and climbing on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. Must be able to work and carry equipment on steep and rough terrain. Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. Safely work high above ground, safely operate a motor vehicle, be proficient in record keeping, and engineering testing equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
