Job/Position DescriptionInterpreter/Translator IThe Interpreter is selected by and is responsible to the Translations Unit Manager (TUM) with the approval of the Directorate Manager of Quality and Information Services. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Translates complex documents such as medical records (including clinical summaries and psychiatric, psychological, operative, pathology and diagnostic-test reports), work history reports, activities of daily living forms, and other evidence of record from Spanish into English with minimal consultation. Produces clear, consistent, accurate, timely, and idiomatic translations. Maintains translation and telephone logs. Interprets conference calls between non-English speaking claimants or medical sources and Claims Adjudicator (CA) or other DDS personnel. Gathers information by phone from claimants, recipients, beneficiaries and medical sources, documenting such information appropriately. Responds to inquiries on technical program issues, clarifies claimant needs, and resolves problems independently. Refers claimants to appropriate resources, including other agencies. Handles sensitive information tactfully and confidentially. Compiles and maintains glossaries of highly technical medical terminology and idiomatic regional words and expressions. Researches specialized terminology, including contacts with outside sources for technical assistance, as needed. Serves as a technical and terminological resource to unit staff. May review glossaries. This position occasionally requires work during the weekends, holidays, and before or after normal business hours. DDS employees perform all business functions for SSA, using the federal SSA network and equipment. Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD)-12 security clearance is required.Essential Job FunctionsTranslates complex foreign-language medical and other reports and#150; including unusual, sensitive or exceptionally difficult documents and#150; for permanent evidence of record in Social Security disability claim files. Maintains a log of translations completed. Acts as a liaison between DE and claimants, beneficiaries, recipients, and interested third parties by responding to telephone inquiries and resolving claim-related issues requiring interpretation services. Establishes standards for customer-focused communication and coordination within areas of responsibility and with all internal and external associates and customers. Researches specialized topics by consulting sources such as glossaries, books, medical reports, Internet, and colleagues to accurately translate a text. Proofreads and edits translated documents to maintain high quality standards. Writes clear, accurate and idiomatic English texts that transfer the meaning of the original Spanish into a similar register and style.
